FAQ

What is a Domain Name and where do I get one?

A domain name is the address that is linked to your new website - for example www. pineapplelily.co.uk is the domain name for this website solution business.

To get your domain name set up you would have to do the following:

  1. check the domain name is available - you can do this on most Domain Seller websites
  2. buy the name and register it under your name or that of your business. This is a simple process and is done at the time of purchase on-line.

BUT wait before you do that!! It is worth sorting out the hosting at the same time, as you can usually get combined deals when purchasing hosting packages i.e. purchase website hosting package and get a free domain name. Read through the rest of the FAQ to find out how I can help you with the set up for hosting.

What is Web Hosting and is it included in my package?

The files used to create your website have to be stored in a central place which is accessible to the public through your website domain name. Your files are stored with a Web Host!

To host a website I would need to act as a reseller to my hosting company and this just adds an extra middle man in the whole chain, which I feel is better kept as short as possible! The larger main hosting companies are realistically able to offer 24/7 support all year round and they have experienced staff to cover this. I am experienced in building websites and not in hosting. I leave that up to the experts!

When you own your website domain and hosting package you are not tied to the website developer/designer and you are free to take your completed website wherever you choose.

I can still help though! As part of your package with me I am happy to sit in on, and guide you through, setting up your web hosting plan. Setting up a hosting account does not take long and is not complicated - I promise! There is no extra cost for this.

If you would prefer to have an all-in-one package there are many companies who will be able to help you. For your own peace of mind make sure that you ask a few questions such as - what happens to your website if they stop operating? If you are being offered hosting as part of a website package- find out how much the hosting charge will be after the inclusive period.

Can I have a blog on my new website?

Yes you can!

There are a few options out there. One would be to have an external Blog with Blogger which I can then seamlessly integrate into your website matching the look and design. You would then be able to Blog wherever you are, whenever you like and your website would automatically be synchronised to show your latest posts.

This feature is available as an Optional Extra, see Pricing.

Can I host a Forum on my new website?

You can have a forum and I am in the process of testing out various solutions such as phpBB, punBB and Vanilla. This feature will be available as an Optional Extra and will be priced from £199 (price dependent on complexity!). If you already have a Forum that you would like to integrate in to your new website then please send me an Enquiry and I will investigate the possibilities.

I have written an eBook, can I sell it on my new website?

Paypal is the most efficient and cost effective way for small business to start selling goods and services, however Paypal (at the time of writing) doesn't directly support the selling of digital downloads. Worry not, there are solutions available! Send me an Enquiry and we can have a chat to see what the options are.

Can I sell goods on my new website?

A cost effective solution for a small business is to seamlessly integrate a shopping cart solution with your Paypal account. You can have all the functionality of a shopping cart which keeps your customers on your website until they are ready to pay, where they are then directed to Paypal to pay either from a Paypal account or with a credit card - customers do not need a Paypal account to buy from your shop.

All of my shopping carts are set up to run within your website. See Pricing.

If you have a Merchant account and want to process credit cards with a Payment Gateway such a Sagepay, Worldpay etc., then this becomes a larger project and my honest advice would be to go to a company that specialises in e-commerce sites.

I don't live locally, can you still build me a website?

No problem, that is what phones are for. I would always insist on talking with a client as I feel it is important to establish a rapport. That is why I would suggest an initial friendly, free, no obligation chat on the phone! Content, artwork, photos etc can all be sorted out via email.

Will my site look the same on different Browsers?

A Website Designer and Developer's nightmare!!

Problems can be experienced with very old platforms such as Internet Explorer 5. I test my sites on all the most popular browsers including:

IE 7 & 8 +
Firefox 3.0 OS-X +
Firefox 3.0 Windows +
Safari 3.0 +
Chroma 3.0 +

I am your best friend - will you do my site for free?

Please don't ask me to put in hours of work for nothing but 'thanks' - I would have to say no and this could create an uncomfortable and embarrassing situation! Doing 'favours' for friends takes me away from doing work for paying customers.

If you are a registered charity, please get in touch to see how I may be able to help you.

I would like you to build me a website, what do I do now?

Make an Enquiry right now! I will respond within 24 hours. We can have a free and friendly chat and then take it from there!

What hours do you work?

I strive for work and life balance and as such keep 'normal' working hours of Monday to Friday 9.30 - 5.30pm.

Of course the reality is there are times when projects will have urgent deadlines and where I am able I will be flexible and work outside of these times - including evenings and weekends HOWEVER this work will be charged at my hourly rate in addition to your package fees.

Urgent admin/maintenance required on completed sites outside of normal hours will be charged at double my normal hourly rate.
